The West Indies sent a strong message to the cricket world with a dominant 35-run victory over Australia in their final T20 World Cup warm-up match in Trinidad. Despite fielding a depleted Australian squad with only nine players and coaches filling in as sub-fielders, the Windies batsmen stole the show.
Nicholas Pooran and Rovman Powell were the stars of the show, delivering half-centuries that decimated the Australian bowlers. Pooran’s breathtaking 75 from just 25 balls, laced with sixes and boundaries, set the tone for a mammoth total. His partner in destruction, Powell, smashed 52 off 25 balls, ensuring that the run rate never dipped. Their aggressive approach was complemented by Sherfane Rutherford, who finished the innings with a rapid 47 not out from 18 balls.
The West Indies‘ final score of 257 for 4 was a testament to their depth and firepower. Pooran’s innings was particularly brutal against Australia’s spinners, Ashton Agar and Adam Zampa, who were dispatched for a combined total of 120 runs from their eight overs.
Australia’s reply was hindered from the outset by the absence of a full squad. With only nine players available and coaches stepping in as substitute fielders, the team struggled to keep pace. Despite a valiant effort from Josh Inglis, who scored a quickfire 55 off 30 balls, the Australian batting lineup was always behind the required run rate.
The decision to open with Ashton Agar, typically a lower-order batsman, was not a surprising move as the warm-up games are for such experiments and the Kangaroos aimed at reshuffling the batting order. Agar did manage a brisk 28 off 13 balls, but his early dismissal highlighted the fragility of the Australian batting order. David Warner, Matthew Wade, and Tim David all made starts but failed to convert these into substantial scores, leaving Australia to chase an increasingly unattainable target.
Nathan Ellis emerged as one of the few bright spots for Australia, contributing both with the ball and the bat. His figures of 4-0-42-0 were among the better bowling performances on a tough day, and his late innings score of 39 off 22 balls added some respectability to the total.
Gudakesh Motie was the standout bowler for West Indies, claiming 2 for 31 and playing a crucial role in tightening the screws during the middle overs. His wickets of Inglis and David were pivotal in stalling the Australian chase.
Australia’s preparation for the World Cup has been marred by logistical challenges and player absences. Marcus Stoinis’ delayed arrival and subsequent non-participation due to missing equipment epitomized the disarray within the camp. The reliance on coaches for fielding duties further underscored the depth issues faced by the team.
